Abiding in Christ
On a cold January day, when the tree trunks present a stark contrast to newly fallen snow, I’m reminded of the hidden work underway in the roots and bare branches of the trees outside my window. We won’t see it until later this spring, but we have every reason to believe that leaves and fruit will return.
Our school-wide spiritual theme has been an important reminder of Christ’s command in John 15:4–5. “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” It has been a privilege to reflect on that reminder throughout the first half of the year.
As we settle into a new calendar year and begin the second semester, I’m grateful for the opportunity to pause and reflect. January always invites us to look back on what God has already done and to look forward with hope to what He will do next. While the days move quickly and the calendar fills almost faster than we can keep up, God remains steady and faithful.
It is my privilege to share just a few highlights here, though there is so much more happening every day. Students are competing in spelling bees and Model UN competitions. Our robotics team is one of the top-ranked teams in New Jersey. Our WINGS students recently joined their partners for a breakfast celebrating the completion of their internships. Students are looking forward to spring break trips to Italy and Denmark, while others are preparing for a week of local service. We have also enjoyed celebrating the arts through a season of concerts, shows, and our fall production of Little Women.
The PTOs continue to encourage and support the school community through faculty room treats and lunches, family movie events, ice-skating and tubing gatherings, and parent nights out. We also saw record participation in our Young Alumni Thanksgiving Chapel. Enrollment for the 2026–2027 school year continues to look strong.
Wyckoff Addition
One of the most exciting developments of this school year is the progress on our Wyckoff addition, which is scheduled to be completed in the next few weeks. These classrooms represent more than an expansion of square footage. They are spaces where teachers will actively engage students in conversations of faith and challenge them to consider the Creator God who delights in art, music, and literature; the Designer God who orders the world through math and science; and the Righteous God who calls us to pursue justice and mercy. There is dedicated space for students who need targeted support and for those who benefit from increased challenge.
We are eager to move into the finished classrooms and look forward to sharing photos, along with opportunities for the community to see the addition once it is complete. We are incredibly grateful to our faithful donors who have generously supported the project, as well as the many skilled craftsmen who have completed the work. We also appreciate the patience and flexibility of students, staff, and families as construction has continued alongside daily school life. We continue to encourage contributions to the Building on a Firm Foundation Capital Campaign so that we can steward the school’s resources well.
High School Program Enhancements
At the high school level, we are continuing to strengthen programs that support students academically, socially, and spiritually. Our goal is to ensure that Eastern Christian students graduate prepared for what God has called them to. We want to challenge students appropriately while also ensuring they are supported, known, and cared for.
With that in mind, we are excited to expand course offerings, including additional Advanced Placement, honors, and principles-level classes. These offerings will help us meet students where they are and provide both greater challenges and stronger foundations as needed.
We will also be transitioning next year to a yearlong drop-block schedule with 55-minute blocks. This structure is designed to reduce long gaps between core subjects, spread learning more evenly across the year, and support healthier academic rhythms. Parents will have the opportunity to learn more about these changes in the coming weeks.
Teaching for Transformation (TfT)
We also continue our ongoing work in Teaching for Transformation, which has helped us strengthen our shared language and practices around Christian discipleship through teaching and learning.
TfT encourages us to be intentional about shaping classroom culture, connecting learning to God’s story, helping students see their gifts and callings, and equipping students to live as Christ-followers in the world. This is not a “one-and-done” initiative. It is long-term work that is steady, thoughtful, and worthwhile. Our early adopters continue to lead the way, and we look forward to training the entire faculty next year. I’m grateful for the ways our teachers continue to grow professionally and spiritually as they refine instruction and nurture students with care.
Looking Ahead
Extracurricular activities are not just an enhancement to classroom learning—they are an integral part of the student experience and are embedded in our mission. Athletics at Eastern Christian are an important part of student life. We have made significant investments in two turf fields and gym upgrades, and the Athletic Booster Club recently sponsored a completely refreshed high school weight room.
We also continue to build on our work through an athletics review as we evaluate how we can strengthen our program. This review includes looking carefully at areas such as program philosophy and structure, student experience and sportsmanship, coaching support and development, competitiveness, participation, and culture. Our goal is to ensure that athletics continues to be a place where students grow not only as athletes, but also as teammates, leaders, and young people who represent Christ well.
We are also continuing to evaluate and strengthen our approach to technology at Eastern Christian School. Technology can be an incredible tool for learning, creativity, and communication, but it also requires wisdom, boundaries, and intentionality. In an age of increasing digital dependence, we intentionally emphasize approaches that prioritize personal interaction, disciplined effort, and authentic experiences.
We are asking important questions: How does technology best support student learning? What habits are we forming in students through daily use? How can we promote focus, healthy relationships, and integrity? How do we partner with families in this area? We want our students to graduate not only as capable users of technology, but also as discerning young people who understand how to use tools wisely and in ways that honor God.
Thank You
As we begin 2026 together, I want to express sincere gratitude to our staff, families, Board, and broader community. It is exciting to see the work that began several years ago in our strategic plan come to fruition. Thank you for the prayers, encouragement, and partnership that make Eastern Christian School what it is. It is a joy to serve this community, and I continue to be grateful for the ways God is at work among us.
With gratitude,
