Eastern Christian School welcomes Kelly Steenstra as a high school English teacher. An EC alumna, Kelly graduated from Eastern University with a bachelor’s degree in writing.

Please tell us about yourself.

I have lived in North Haledon my whole life, and I am a proud EC alum of 2021. I attended Eastern University where I received an English degree and explored other areas of interest, including history, marketing, Christian thought, and leadership. When I am not reading a book, discovering good music, or enjoying a great film, you can find me spending time with my siblings and my little nephew. I also love traveling to see my out-of-state friends or to stay at my family’s lake house in the Adirondacks.

Tell the story of how you got to EC.

Despite my initial hesitation to study English, the Lord planted a passion for writing and literature in my heart that has grown over the years. My experience as a writing tutor has further developed my love of teaching, and I am so excited to help students become better writers in the classroom. I am amazed at how stories can help shape students to become the best version of themselves, and I am blessed to be able to witness that! As an EC alum, I am very familiar with the mission of the school, and I knew God was calling me back to be a part of that mission.

What sets EC apart?

Christian education is the only way education can be delivered to its fullest. The Lord’s work exists in everything we study, whether it be the delicate details of chemistry, the beauty of poetry, the complexities of history, or the intricacies of mathematics. When studying the world through a Christian lens, students learn important truths that allow them to grow academically, personally, and spiritually. Eastern Christian also incorporates a Christ-centered approach in areas beyond academics, like athletics, arts, and service, to better equip our students and strengthen their relationship with the Lord through their grade school years and beyond. God is doing mighty things in this community!
