WOODLAND PARK — "There were 351 people running in Brian's Run in Wayne on a pleasant September morning in 2003. Exactly 318 of them lost to a 9-year-old making her 5K debut.

As the years have gone by, that same 9-year-old won over 200 races. She is a senior at Eastern Christian, with an older sister you might have heard of and a slew of colleges beating down her door.

Kristen Traub is that girl. Now 17, she has the smooth, confident stride of an experienced runner. She has the bug bad ... the running bug." Read more...

Dribble For Justice

On June 4, the student of Hawthorne Christian Academy and Eastern Christian High School partnered together to do their part in the battle against the injustice of human trafficking.  The schools coordinated an event where participants raised money by finding sponsors for a four mile run in North Haledon.  Students ran, walked, and dribbled a basketball, which led to the events name “dribble for justice”.  Funds raised from this event will be forwarded to the International Justice Mission who battles against human trafficking on an international level.

International Justice Mission is a human rights agency that secures justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppressions.  IJM lawyers, investigators and aftercare professionals work with local governments to ensure victim rescue, prosecution of perpetrators and strengthening of the community and civic factors that promote functioning public justice systems.  IJM’s professionals work in 12 countries to secure tangible and sustainable protection of national laws through local court systems.

This fund raiser is a preview to the Kicks Against Breast Cancer fund raising game the team will be apart of. Veenstra said, "We look forward to our second annual 'pink' soccer game with our friendly rivals Pompton Lakes on the 20th."

Eastern University appears to be the place to go for Eastern Christian student-athletes.

Two of the top players over the last few years have decided to go two hours south to the school that is outside of Philadelphia. The lure of the King of Prussia school even drew Ben de Waal Malefyt, one of the school's top track and field athletes, even though it does not have an organized track and field team. read more...

ECHS Soccer Star

Eastern Christian's Kelsey Spoelstra (#7) will be playing college soccer at Eastern University.

Kelsey Spoelstra still watches the video of Eastern Christian High School's state title victory in 2007.  The graduated-senior said she will remember it for the rest of her life.  In that game Spoelstra scored a goal in the first minute of overtime resulting in a 2-1 victory over Bishop Eustace to win the 2007 Non-Public B championship.

"It's crazy thing because I still go to Facebook and watch the video, I get chills watching it every time," said Spoelstra, who added that she
gets to look at the winning ball every day when at school.  read more...
